She played the role of Beneatha in the European premier of Raisin and went on to co-author a one-woman musical about the life of Ethel Waters that received a special commendation from the Kennedy Center, in Washington, D.C. In 2020, ValLimar received the prestigious Kennedy Center Medallion for her work in university/college theatre education.
Known especially for her work in contemporary Christian styles, ValLimar sings a wide range of music from Spirituals to traditional, organ-based choral music. She began recording professionally in 2003 with the two CDs: Catholic Classics: African American Sacred Songs and Cross Culture: Songs of Faith from Near and Far.
ValLimar’s first solo CD, You Gotta Move, was released in 2005, followed by the energetic Anointing and her collection of 10 well-known spirituals in new, contemporary arrangements, Get On Board. She celebrates gospel music in Psalms From The Soul, which includes gospel-style psalms and canticles with verbatim texts from the Lectionary. ValLimar praises God in a traditional and contemporary way in her CD, Give God The Glory, and in Spirit & Soul, she brings her signature style to 10 favorite songs in contemporary Christian music.
ValLimar has performed and collaborated with some of the best-known composers of contemporary worship music. Her stirring rendition of Jamie Cortez’s classic song “Rain Down” can be heard on the CD Live It! produced by Sarah Hart, and her soaring vocal celebration of Friedman and Vogt’s song “Celebrate Freedom” can be heard on the CD Enter The Journey. ValLimar sings lead and background vocals for several songs on Tom Kendzia’s collections Clothed In Love and Endless Is Your Love.
For 19 years, ValLimar was a cantor for numerous opening events and closing liturgies at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress. She has served as a cantor, principal vocalist, lector, workshop presenter and/or emcee at many major national and international events including the National Catholic Youth Conference, National Catholic Educational Association Conference, National Conference for Catechetical Leadership, National Council of Catholic Women Convention, National Encuentro Conference, National Jubilee Justice Conference, World Youth Days in Krakow, Poland, and Panama City, Panama, and more. ValLimar and her husband, Frank Jansen, performed for over 300,000 people at the Loreto/Angora International Papal Event in Italy. The event was broadcast on Italian television and across the world on EWTN.
In the events she offers, ValLimar’s goal is to inspire a renewed, passionate love of our faith through Scripture, song, story and movement. Currently, her events include: intergenerational parish events, school and youth events, retreats of many kinds, cantor/lector workshops, liturgical workshops and concerts. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, she now offers virtual and hybrid formats as well as in-person events.
Drawing on her undergraduate (California State University, San Bernadino) and graduate (University of California, Santa Barbara) degrees in the Arts, ValLimar composes all her music in collaboration with her husband, Frank Jansen. They live in California and have three children.
