OCTAVO SPOTLIGHT
Halina, Hesus Rene B. Javellana, SJ and Eduardo P. Hontiveros, SJ
Rich choral harmonies characterize this lovely work for the Advent season, one of the classic liturgical songs in the Philippines. Despite being sung entirely in Filipino, assemblies from all over the world will quickly learn the easy two-word refrain “Halina, Hesus!” (“Come, Jesus!”), making it ideal for intercultural liturgies. An English translation of all the lyrics is provided alongside biographical notes about the composer, Jesuit Father Hontiveros, whose music is a great example of the early Filipino folk style that developed after the Second Vatican Council.
