October 7: The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary

Blessed Virgin Mary

The history: The dedication of the month of October to the holy rosary has its roots in a military victory in 1571 when a coalition of Christian forces defeated the Ottoman navy as they advanced toward the west. Success was attributed, in part, to Pope Saint Pius V's request to all of Europe to pray the rosary for victory. He established the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7 as a day of thanksgiving to Mary for her protection and intervention.

The rosary: This uniquely Catholic way of prayer allows us to meditate on the mysteries of Christ’s life and guides us through the challenges and temptations we face daily in our increasingly secularized world.

The music: Here are song suggestions to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary in light of the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.
