Greg Walton’s Eyes on the Cross will delight listeners of all ages, whether enjoying in the car or incorporating into their celebration of the liturgy. And he wastes no time in getting to the core thematic elements of his latest collection. Opening with a soft piano ballad, he explores love, forgiveness and inclusion, while focusing our attention toward what is perhaps the greatest symbol of God’s love: the cross. Greg calls us to not only find comfort in Christ’s great sacrifice, but guidance as well. He writes, “While it’s a sign of our redemption through Christ’s sacrifice, the Cross is also a great example of where love leads.” Through all the noise that seems to fill our lives, in the cross we remember our purpose and mission.

Greg also addresses inequality in this collection, calling attention to the need for charity and service. This can be found in “Givin’ It All Away,” as well as his “Tune of Ignorance.” In this song, Greg’s lyrics mimic a daily routine in our modern world: quick and rhythmic, from one subject to the next. He notes that many of us move through our lives choosing to face away from the pain and suffering that surround us. And it is our ignorance that, in many ways, turns us away from God.

Yet, there is hope. When we make mistakes, when we feel as though we have failed ourselves, he urges us to turn to the cross. In “Come to Us” Greg sings, “Unworthy to taste from your heavenly vine / But your word will heal us; come light divine!” We need Christ’s help to help those around us. In this way, through our actions, we can glorify him.
