Jerusalem the Golden
This short, chanted piece for unaccompanied SSA choir uses Neale’s translation of the first verse of Bernard of Cluny’s Latin hymn “Urbs Sion Aurea.” Mostly unison throughout, it occasionally breaks into three-part harmony. Though initially written for the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome, its focus on Jerusalem as the Holy City—and thus, by analogy, on eternal life and the kingdom of God in Heaven—it can be used any time during Lent, for funerals, and the feasts of All Saints and All Souls’ Day.
