This version of the “lamp-lighting hymn,” scored for SATB and organ, is by turns quiet and majestic, peaceful and powerful, simple and intricate. White uses fleeting moments of dissonance and occasional forays into modal harmony to wonderful effect, adding drama to an otherwise tranquil hymn.
