O Christ, Unshielded and Unspared

This powerful text by Genevieve Glen, OSB, focuses on the redemptive power of Christ’s suffering; as such, it is appropriate for Lent, but also Christ the King. It is set in a forthright fashion for SAB choir and organ. In a foursquare common time, with pervasive dotted rhythmic figures, the music, though stately, has an almost martial feel, which matches the often militaristic imagery of the lyrics. Starting and ending in E-flat major, effective word painting motivates several chromatic excursions to the sharp side (G-sharp minor and E major, for example).
